Flame lit for 2013 European Youth Olympic Winter Festival in Brasov

The Olympic Flame for the XI European Youth Olympic Winter Festival (EYOWF) Competition was lit on Saturday during a flame lighting ceremony in Athens' ancient Panathenian (Kallimarmaro) Stadium, from where it will travel to the Romanian city of Brasov, host of the 2013 EYOWF, which opens on February 17.

The flame was lit by actress Ino Menegaki, in the role of a high priestess, from the direct rays of the sun, in a ceremony at Athens' ancient Panathenian Stadium, venue of the first Modern Olympic Games, where it was formally turned over Hellenic Olympic Committee president Spyros Kapralos to Brasov Mayor George Scripcaru.

During the biennial multi-sporting event, which will be hosted in Brasov and the nearby cities of Rasnov and Predeal from February 17 to 22, participants aged 14 to 17 from 37 European countries will compete in eight Olympic winter sports disciplines: Alpine Skiing, Cross Country Skiing, Biathlon, Ice Hockey, Figure Skating, Short Track, Ski Jumping and Snowboarding.
