Rethymno's Carnival 2014

It’s been one century this year, since a group of people from Rethymno – with optimistic mood and open heart to every pleasant challenge – decides to put some colour to the everyday life of the city, during the Carnival season.

So, in 1914 the first Carnival of Rethymno was organized, bringing the original mark of the intentions of the people of Rethymno. Through the years, these intentions turned into actions that exceeded every time the expectations of their inspirers and finally turned to be an amazing event: the Carnival of Rethymno, a live organism, tending to reverse the natural route of life: the “older” it’s getting the better it is becoming!

This year’s carnival subject is focused on this inversion and invites whoever deeply hopes for better days, whoever sees rainbow colors beyond grey to be part of the large, emotional and fresh Team of the Carnival of Rethymno and share, create, have fun and experience things that nobody wants to miss.

We invite you to create and share this experience, having in our mind and our heart the fact that when people cooperate, every day becomes special and life itself becomes more beautiful. It is as simple as that.

Good News. Tundra swans migrate through Evros Delta in record numbers.

A record number of Tundra swans (specifically of the Bewick's Swan subspecies) have been spotted at the Evros Delta in northern Greece over the past few days, according to conservationists in the area.

"We have counted 2,610 Tundra swans, significantly more than the 2,250 we counted in 2010, which was the highest number ever recorded in Greece," Panagiotis Ioannidis, environmental chief of the agency responsible for managing the protected wetland, told the state-run Athens-Macedonia News Agency on Tuesday.

The conservationist suggested that clement weather in Greece coupled with below-average temperatures in other parts of Europe attracted the elegant snowy-white migratory birds to Evros en route to the northern hemisphere ahead of the spring, when they will begin nesting.

"We have observed a rise in the number of swans but we cannot with any certainty explain the phenomenon. We guess that weather conditions and colder winters in northern areas have forced the birds to opt for more southern parts and this may be why they have chosen the Evros Delta as their number one wintering destination," Ioannidis added.

The Two Faces of January

Plot Summary: 1962. A glamorous American couple, the charismatic Chester MacFarland (Mortensen) and his alluring younger wife Colette (Dunst), arrive in Athens by boat via the Corinthian Canal.

While sightseeing at the Acropolis they encounter Rydal (Isaac), a young, Greek-speaking American who is working as a tour guide, scamming tourists on the side. Drawn to Colette’s beauty and impressed by Chester's wealth and sophistication, Rydal gladly accepts their invitation to dinner.

However, all is not as it seems with the MacFarlands and Chester’s affable exterior hides darker secrets. When Rydal visits the couple at their exclusive hotel, Chester presses him to help move the body of a seemingly unconscious man who he claims attacked him. In the moment, Rydal agrees but as events take a more sinister turn he finds himself compromised and unable to pull him free.
His increasing infatuation with the vulnerable and responsive Colette gives rise to Chester’s jealousy and paranoia, leading to a tense and dangerous battle of wits between the two men. Their journey takes them from Greece to Turkey, and to a dramatic finale played out in the back alleys of Istanbul's Grand Bazaar.
