The Two Faces of January

Plot Summary: 1962. A glamorous American couple, the charismatic Chester MacFarland (Mortensen) and his alluring younger wife Colette (Dunst), arrive in Athens by boat via the Corinthian Canal.

While sightseeing at the Acropolis they encounter Rydal (Isaac), a young, Greek-speaking American who is working as a tour guide, scamming tourists on the side. Drawn to Colette’s beauty and impressed by Chester's wealth and sophistication, Rydal gladly accepts their invitation to dinner.

However, all is not as it seems with the MacFarlands and Chester’s affable exterior hides darker secrets. When Rydal visits the couple at their exclusive hotel, Chester presses him to help move the body of a seemingly unconscious man who he claims attacked him. In the moment, Rydal agrees but as events take a more sinister turn he finds himself compromised and unable to pull him free.
His increasing infatuation with the vulnerable and responsive Colette gives rise to Chester’s jealousy and paranoia, leading to a tense and dangerous battle of wits between the two men. Their journey takes them from Greece to Turkey, and to a dramatic finale played out in the back alleys of Istanbul's Grand Bazaar.

Chatting with Cavafy

"And after all, you see, we do go forward" is written on the back of the bus that passes you by a Monday morning and makes your day. "I’m in no mood for work today," you read on a poster in Athens Metro and you feel that you couldn’t agree more.

On the carriage of the tram, something reminds you that “so far as you have come is no small feat”! What happened and the streets of the city have flood in with the lyrics of Constantine Cavafy?

The Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation, which has recently purchased the Cavafy Archive, celebrates the Year of Cavafy 2013 with this inspiring campaign, urging Athenians to meet Cavafy and talk with him because his poetry belongs to the people.

The campaign was designed by the multi-awarded Beetroot Design Group from Thessaloniki, which contributed its own popular perspective to the project. So, for those who feel like "foreigners" or for those who have decided to move forward, the Alexandrian poet is available for chatting!

1st Mykonos Biennale

The 1st Mykonos Biennale is taking place this summer, on June 21-23, when more than 100 international artists will visit the islands of Mykonos and Delos -on UNESCO’s World Heritage list- this month to partake in the event, "an artist-run, avant-garde festival of new media, film and art."

The theme is "Crisis and Paganism," which "mocks the crisis industry’s choice of Greece as a main protagonist in their current financial disaster scenario."

Of course, this is not just your average biennale. The Mykonos version makes its own statement: "This is not a biennale," but a symposium where art and philosophy meet…its ambition being to create a unique event, where personalities are invited to communicate the spirit of humanity.
Events include a video/film festival, a boat trip to Delos art exhibitions, installations and more. The heart of the festival is the Cine Mando that will host the first open air video film festival, lively discussions and debates.

Artists in Greece are fighting back against cuts to arts funding, as the country struggles to solve its debt crisis and impose tough austerity measures.

The lack of funding has inspired people working across a range of the arts, from theatre and music to street art.

Some artists' work is becoming more political while others are using humour to deal with cuts of up to 30%.

Mark Lowen reports from Athens.

Ilias Kiriakidis, peintre artiste-artisan

Presidential Mansion Gardens open to public

The Presidential Mansion garden constitutes a green haven in the centre of Athens and occupies an area of about 25,000 square metres (just over 6 acres). In the middle of the nineteenth century, this area, because of its especially fertile soil, was in fact the vegetable garden of the former Royal Palace (Crown Prince's Palace, now the Parliament building), designed by Ernst Ziller.

After the erection of the mansion in 1897 and the construction of Herodou Attikou Street, the area which surrounded the Crown Prince's Palace was fashioned into a large ornamental garden. The planning of this appears to have been assigned to Ziller's technical office. The selection of suitable plants, though, apparently was entrusted to a Greek specialist, since most of the trees are native to Greece.

From the very beginning the garden was divided into two large sections because of the slope of the land. The building is situated in the upper section.
The design of the garden in front of the building was similar to that of other neo-classical structures of the period (the Academy, the University and the National Library).

The garden follows a relatively rigid geometric plan of the French type, with symmetrical beds of grass and seasonal flowering plants. The formalism of the composition approaching Herod Atticus Road is alleviated by the perennial plane trees, lindens, palms and cypress trees.

The Presidential Mansion Gardens will be open on Sundays, except holidays, beginning this Sunday June 1, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, from the Vassileos Georgiou B' Street entrance.

Admission is free, with the display of a police identity card or passport.
Previous arrangements are required for group visits (schools, clubs), at telephone numbers: 210-7283289 and 210-7224939.

Approaching Surrealism July 1–September 30, 2012

Over the coming months the Basil and Elise Goulandris Foundation and its Museum of Contemporary Art, Andros, will be presenting a thematic tribute to Surrealism, one of the greatest and most subversive art movements of the past century. Surrealism was a movement of protest set to challenge all that had been the accepted norm mainly in the art of verse, and by implication also in the visual arts. Rather than evolving into an aesthetic school, it focused all its energies and aspirations on inventing ways through which to change life itself, concerned as it was not with aesthetic beauty but with the dynamics of the spirit.

With as many as 100 exhibits, including collages, paintings, and sculptures, constructions, prints, and photographs, as well as highly relevant archival material, the exhibition (which is scheduled to run from July 1 through to September 30, 2012) will offer visitors the opportunity to ‘approach surrealism’ through the work of both international and Greek artists.

Understandably, a visual event with all its intrinsic limitations (see technical means, research and funding potential) cannot possibly exhaust the ideological breadth and rich iconography of that massively iconoclastic movement of the avant-garde (the most popular of its kind since impressionism, as it turns out), which was born of a complete surrender to the power of impulse and the dream, to automatic writing and paradox, to the creative imagination and those repressed forces of the mind, and which challenged iconographic convention and the established cultural mores of post-war societies with unmitigated ferocity.

As its title emphatically suggests, the exhibition aims to approach and in turn communicate the message of an art that was bold enough to walk down the uncharted pathways of the soul and so to open up new horizons; an art that passed from being the object of dismissive irony, from an early stage of vagueness and fluidity, of quasi totalitarianism and political dispute followed by purges of some of the movement’s founding members, to achieving recognition and wide social appeal and even having some degree of influence on social and cultural behaviours.

Even the name of that art, Surrealism, a term invented by coincidence, has long since transcended its purely literary and artistic function and has found its way into everyday speech to suggest the uncanny or paradoxical, the extraordinary within the ordinary.
The event comprises two sections:

The first, which makes up the exhibition’s core section, deals with historical Surrealism and its formative impact on twentieth-century sensibility, bringing together works by approximately twenty artists and archival material pertaining both to founding members and latecomers to the movement.

The second section attempts an approach of the literary and visual achievements of the Greek surrealists.

The bilingual (Greek-English) volume that is to accompany the exhibition will be produced by the well-known Greek publishing house MIKRI ARKTOS and will feature an introduction by MOCA-Andros director, Mr. Kyriakos Koutsomallis, and essays by Mmes. Hélène Glykatzi-Ahrweiler, Nadja Argyropoulou, Ioulita Iliopoulou, and Niki Loizidi, as well as Messrs. Nanos Valaoritis and Alecos Fassianos.

Related events organized in the context of the exhibition will include, among others, a roundtable on Surrealism featuring a number of literary luminaries among the key speakers, chaired as always by University of Europe Rector and President, Mrs. Hélène Glykatzi-Ahrweiler.
