Classicism and Europe: The destiny of Greece and Italy

An exhibition exploring the birth of Classicism and the legacy of Greece and Italy to Europe was inaugurated at the National Archaeological Museum in Athens on Wednesday evening at 19:30, opening its doors to the public on Thursday.

"It is an impressive exhibition that through 25 exhibits spans an incredible journey through time, from the prehistoric era to the modern age. In reality, we are talking about Greco-Italian civilisation and for this reason one could not easily separate them," Greek Culture and Sports Minister Constantinos Tasoulas said in a press conference at the museum.

Entitled "Classicism and Europe: The destiny of Greece and Italy," the exhibition began in Rome while Greece still held the presidency of the European Union, and comes to Athens now that the EU presidency has been taken over by Italy. It will remain at the National Archaeological Museum in Athens until October 31.

It features 25 works of art spanning a period of 4,500 years, from the early prehistoric civilisations of the Aegean (Cycladic, Minoan and Mycenean) passing through the Archaic era of the 6th century BC - including the Acropolis Kore and the relief of the 'Pensive Athena' - to sculptures representing the rise of democracy in ancient Greece. It continues with the rise of Christianity through Byzantine art and a replica of the Rossano Bible, the oldest illustrated Bible in the world, the Renaissance, featuring works by El Greco and Mattia Preti and continues right up to the 20th century, with works by Giani, Cadorin, Moralis and Parthenis.

The exhibition is organised with the collaboration of the Italian EU presidency and Greece, via the foreign and culture ministries in both countries. The works of art were contributed by the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, the New Acropolis Museum, the Iraklio Archaeological Museum, the Byzantine and Christian Museum, the Greek National Gallery, the Capitoline Museums-Centrale Montemartini, the National Etruscan Museum of Villa Giulia, the Naples National Archaeological Museum and other archaeological museums in Italy.

It is taking place under the auspices of the Greek and Italian presidents and had more than 85,000 visitors while on show in Italy.

Έκθεση ζωγραφικής της κυρίας Ευαγγελίας Κουβίδου που διεξάγεται στο Χαρουπόμυλο Πανόρμου, από τις 2-13 Αυγούστου. Πρόκειται για τη δωδέκατη ατομική έκθεση της γνωστής ζωγράφου.
Η Ευαγγελία Κουβίδου γεννήθηκε στην Αγία Γαλήνη Κρήτης και είναι κάτοικος Αθηνών. Σπούδασε μοντελίστ, επέλεξε τη ζωγραφική, θεωρώντας ότι την εκφράζει περισσότερο συναισθηματικά και δημιουργικά.

Είναι αυτοδίδακτη και η ταυτότητα των έργων της αποκαλύπτεται λόγω μιας ιδιαίτερης τεχνοτροπίας. Εκτός από τις ατομικές της εκθέσεις, έχει συμμετάσχει και σε πολλές ομαδικές.

Domenicos Theotokopoulos (El Greco) between Venice and Rome.

The island of Crete, which is the birthplace of Renaissance master Domenicos Theotokopoulos - better known as El Greco – is kicking off a round of exhibitions in Greece for El Greco Year. The Greek tribute to the painter, marking the 400th anniversary since the old master's death, opens today with the inauguration on June 20 of the exhibition "Domenikos Theotokopoulos between Venice and Rome" at the Historical Museum of Crete in Heraklio.

El Greco Year will also be celebrated with events in other museums in Greece, such as the National Gallery, the Alex Mylonas Museum – Macedonia Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Byzantine & Christian Museum. In addition to 24 works of art on loan from Italy, Spain, Austria, and Bosnia-Herzegovina, many of El Greco’s famous paintings are included in the round of exhibitions. Amongst them are “"Luke the Evangelist" and "The Adoration of the Magi (Shepherds)"from the Benaki Museum.

The exhibition is officially opened at the Historical Museum at 8:00pm on Friday, 20th June 2014 by El Greco Year Organizing Committee President Lina Mendoni, General Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, with HE Mr. Alfonso Lucini Mateo, Spanish Ambassador to Greece, in attendance. The Benaki Museum is to be represented by its director, Professor Angelos Delivorias.

Admission to the temporary exhibition D. Theotokopoulos between Venice and Rome is free, as is attendance at sessions of the international academic symposium on El Greco: The Cretan Years.

Hommage à Mélina Mercouri au Musée Benaki. Commémoration de 20 ans depuis sa mort.

La légende de Melina Mercouri reste toujours vivante. Cette année le prix Melina Mercouri, accorde aux gens du théâtre, coïncide avec la commémoration de vingt ans depuis sa mort. 

Dans ce cadre la Fondation qui porte son nom organise une exposition intitulée ‘’Rue Melina Mercouri’’ au Musée Benaki. La Fondation procédera également á la publication d’un album intitulé "Melina". 

Le 4 mars au Musée Benaki seront présentés l'album et l'exposition et aussi sera attribué le prix Melina Mercouri. Pendant la cérémonie, sera présenté la pièce théâtrale ‘’2013 / Melina M’’ de Constantine Aspiotis. 

Le prix est décerné annuellement á la meilleure actrice de la dernière saison théâtrale. Il s’agit de 3000 euros, alors que l'actrice honorée garde pour une année la broche de Melina Mercouri. Cette année les trois actrices grecques qui sont candidats sont : Lena Drosaki, Nadia Kontogeorgi et Gioulika Skafida.

Exhibition «Art of Medieval Serbia» at the Byzantine and Christian Museum of Athens.

The exhibition is organized in collaboration with the National Museum of Belgrade. The inauguration will be attended by the H.E. the Ambassador of the Republic of Serbia in Athens, Mr Dragan Županjevac and the director of the National Museum of Belgrade Mrs Bojana Borić Brešković.

Notable objects, original and copies from the National Museum of Belgrade form an exhibition that is presented in the first floor of the Duchess of Plaisance building, and is divided into four thematic units.

 On display are minor art objects (11th-14th c.), double-sided icons and Sanctuary doors and also wall-painting copies. 
These copies reproduce wall-paintings from important medieval monuments of Serbia, i.e. from the monasteries of Μileševa, Sopoćani, Studenica, Gračanica and elsewhere, which reflect the values of the Byzantine artistic tradition.

These important items that will eventually be displayed in the New Permanent Exhibition of the National Belgade Museum, are presented in Greece as an ensemble for the first time, offering to the public the unique opportunity to come into touch with the medieval culture and art of Serbia.

In the exhibition area a short film (8') will be screened presenting the most important Serbian monuments of this period.
During the next months (June-August 2013) Serbian and Greek Byzantinists will give informal talks in specific issues related to the architecture, the painting and, in general, to the art of Serbia during the 13th and 14th centuries.

Crisis is a Greek Word (Travelling Exhibit in Izmir)

Fifty of the best Greek visual communication designers are participating until March 29 at an international exhibit in Izmir, Turkey, titled Crisis is a Greek word. This is a global initiative exploring the ongoing distress that has been affecting more and more countries, inspiring these top designers -with over one thousand international and national distinctions between them- to convey a message of creativity to the world.

The project includes works printed on cloth, videos, algorithm and industrial design. In Turkey, the designers will hold a one-day meeting with Turkish designers that will include the collaborating Faculty of Fine Arts and Design of Izmir University of Economics.

A competition will be held for Turkish designers to produce a poster that will travel with the exhibit once it leaves Turkey on March 29. The project was conceived and organised by the Susurrus group -a non profitable organization of artists willing to communicate design values all over the world.

Aegean: Birth of an Archipelago

An original exhibition on the birth of the geological treasures of the Aegean Archipelago will be on display at the Centre and Technology Museum NOESIS in Thessaloniki from February 19 to May 30.

The birth of the Aegean archipelago is eloquently illustrated by audiovisual interactive presentations, rich photographic material and unique exhibits.

The main section of the exhibition, entitled Recollections of Gaia: from the Tethys Ocean to the Aegean Archipelago, examines the geological history of the region from the vast Tethys Ocean till today. A 14-metre petrified trunk is the most impressive exhibit of this section.

The second section, In the islands of Hephaestus and Poseidon focuses on volcanic activity which gave birth to the unique and diverse formations of the region. A floor map with typical rocks and fossils constitutes the highlight of this section. The third section, Gaia: from Myth to Science, follows the trail of the region’s vast biodiversity during the last 150 million years.

Fossilized trunks, roots, fruits, leaves and seeds alongside animal representations initiate the visitor in a unique journey.

The exhibition is organized by the National History Museum of Lesvos Petrified Forrest in collaboration with the Museum of Paleontology and Geology and the Natural History Museum of Crete.
