GoGreece @ World Cup

The time has come for the much-awaited 2014 World Cup, and on June 14, the Greek National Team has its first match against Colombia in Brazil’s Belo Horizonte, with Greece hoping for a great start. The team will then face Japan on June 19, and the Ivory Coast on June 24, completing the first round of games.

The Greek team is currently ranked 10th in the world, with its trademark rock-solid defence as its stronger asset. The defence, which let in just four goals in 10 qualifiers, sealed the team’s place in Brazil. Coach Santos expects the same efficiency against early favourite Colombia, Yaya Toure’s Ivory Coast and Asia champions Japan. Veteran midfielders Karagounis and Katsouranis remain dominant figures, while Samaras, Mitroglou and Salpingidis provide a variety of attacking options.

This summer marks ten years since Greece’s stunning triumph at 2004 Euro Cup in Portugal, and the Greek team hopes to celebrate the anniversary with a successful run at the World Cup. The aim is to go one step further than they did in the 2010 South Africa World Cup and reach the tournament’s knock-out phase. Going further may seem difficult, but, after all, big sports events are made of big dreams, as the team’s 2004 triumph proved. Go Greece!

The Rally of Gods

WRC σημαίνει Ακρόπολις!

The World Rally Championship Program has provoked a lot of comments during the past years with many arguing that a revised calendar with an introduction of new rallies would renovate the institution. Nevertheless, the idea of having a base of classic rallies prevailed and, thus, made the Rally of Monte Carlo, the Rally of Finland and the Acropolis Rally something equivalent to the WRC.
Just a year before celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Acropolis
Rally, both the Organizing Committee and the participants are ready for this challenge, aiming to carry out a rally worth waiting for by all WRC fans worldwide.
The Greek recession has inevitably affected the Acropolis Rally and although the difficulties were very much apparent from the beginning, it all turned out fine. By following the same successful recipe, Celeritas has once again found a way to prepare a rally worthy of its legend and aligned with the new facts. Thus, the 59th Acropolis Rally will be carried out in three days but with shorter total length. The decision for cutting down costs had as a result the planning of a route that would not disperse the crews far from the centre of the Rally and would also make a clever use and planning of the classic special stages in Peloponnese.
And of course, as Greeks always want to make the difference, during the first day the “Gods” of the WRC will compete under the summer moonlight, in an attempt to revive the 2011 night special stage.
The crews will fight in a total of 14 special stages with the overall kilometers reaching the 306,53. Club Hotel Casino Loutraki will be once more the hosting venue of the Acropolis Rally Headquarters while the Service Park will be held at the Engineer Directorate Camp (Loutraki).
Well, lights are on and the World Rally Championship crews are ready to battle once again under the Greek sky, side by side with the crews of the
Greek Championship who will do their best to satisfy all their fans.
So, let’s move up to the mountains of Peloponnese and prove once more the reason why the Acropolis Rally forms an integral part of the WRC.

Flame lit for 2013 European Youth Olympic Winter Festival in Brasov

The Olympic Flame for the XI European Youth Olympic Winter Festival (EYOWF) Competition was lit on Saturday during a flame lighting ceremony in Athens' ancient Panathenian (Kallimarmaro) Stadium, from where it will travel to the Romanian city of Brasov, host of the 2013 EYOWF, which opens on February 17.

The flame was lit by actress Ino Menegaki, in the role of a high priestess, from the direct rays of the sun, in a ceremony at Athens' ancient Panathenian Stadium, venue of the first Modern Olympic Games, where it was formally turned over Hellenic Olympic Committee president Spyros Kapralos to Brasov Mayor George Scripcaru.

During the biennial multi-sporting event, which will be hosted in Brasov and the nearby cities of Rasnov and Predeal from February 17 to 22, participants aged 14 to 17 from 37 European countries will compete in eight Olympic winter sports disciplines: Alpine Skiing, Cross Country Skiing, Biathlon, Ice Hockey, Figure Skating, Short Track, Ski Jumping and Snowboarding.

Critical Mass Heraklion

If you want some exercise and some fun without damaging the environment, why not join one of the cycle rides of Critical Mass Heraklion?

Critical Mass is a cycling event typically held on the last Friday of every month in over 300 cities around the world. The ride was originally founded in 1992 in San Francisco. It basically involves meeting at a set location and time and travelling as a group through city or town streets on bikes. Some bigger scale events as in Budapest, Hungary, have an activist group formed around it, organising the rides and communicating the desires and problems of the cyclists to the city council.

Inspired by the international movement, 5 cyclists started their own ride here in Heraklion in 2008. The 5 became 50, then 500, and now there are roughly 1400 members of the group, although of course not all of them are present at any one event! Their ages range from 2 (helped out by parents!) to 72 and as there is no formalised structure, each member has an equal say in the organisation of events. There are monthly rides and weekly rides. In winter, the monthly rides take place on the last Friday of every month starting from Lion Square at 6pm; in summer, it’s every last Saturday starting at midday. The weekly rides are on Wednesdays and start from Hania Gate (Hanioporta) at 6pm.

However, that’s not the end of it. The aim of the group is to make more people aware of the benefits of a bike not only as a means of transport within the crowded streets of the town, but as a means of recreation and improving the quality of life. To that end, as part of the bicycle festivals (three to date) they organise seminars on cycle safety, hold cycle repair workshops, sell second-hand bikes and biking accessories and even organise concerts. Seminars on safe bike riding are also being held in schools, and there have been clean-ups at beaches and other parts of the town and surrounding areas as part of their environmental awareness campaign.

So how about it? All you need to do is get on your bike!

Epirus: the rafting experience in Greece

Mainland Greece hides numerous, densely vegetated rivers, offering amazing rafting opportunities. Arachthos, Aoos and Voidomatis in Epirus region, are only some of the many rivers that offer excitement to amateur and experienced rafters alike.

River Arachtos in the region of Tzoumerka is a brilliant choice for those looking for some serious action, instead of just enjoying a peaceful trip.

It is located in the region of Tzoumerka, which consists of several small villages, the main of which are Syrrako, Kalarrytes, and Pramanda. Rafting in Arachthos is a totally refreshing activity, mainly suitable for experts, as most of the routes are graded from 3 up to 5. Rivers Voidomatis and Aoos are in Zagori, an area of 46 different villages known as Zagorochoria.

Voidomatis provides visitors with plenty of routes and stunning landscape views. It is suitable for families, as the river is considered accessible to children. On the contrary river Aoos, is the perfect place for those who are eager to experience  the thrill of challenging rafting.

Both regions, Tzoumerka and Zagori offer plenty of après-rafting activities. They are surrounded by spectacular nature: high peaks and beautiful gorges with stunning flora are there to be explored. After a full day of activities, visitors may choose to taste local products and foods, such as Epirus’s famous pies, drink rakomelo (raki with honey), socialize with other visitors and locals and relax in comfortable guest houses.

Rethymno stuns Panionios, who sacks its coach

Olympiakos is now alone on top of the Basket League, after Panionios suffered a shock loss at thome to AGO Rethymnou that also cost the job to its coach.

The Reds had absolutely no problem in thrashing bottom club Kavala 113-62 at home on Monday, with coach Giorgos Bartzokas resting his top-pick players to such an extent as to use Vassilis Spanoulis for no more than five minutes.
Panionios is now one point behind Olympiakos as Rethymno, in fourth, produced a commanding performance at Nea Smyrni to win 86-70 on Sunday, forcing the dismissal of Panionios coach Thanasis Skourtopoulos. The record of two losses in as many Eurocup games for Panionios to date did not help the Greek coach's case either.

KAO Dramas gave third-placed Panathinaikos a good run for its money, but the Athens giant emerged victorious in the end with a 63-60 score at Drama.
PAOK now forms part of the top five after defeating visiting Kolossos Rhodes 68-63, Ikaros Kallitheas saw off Peristeri 66-55 at home.

Promoted Panelefsiniakos beat Ilisiakos at Peristeri on Sunday, with the Zografou club announcing on Monday the hiring of coach Giorgos Zevgolis.
In the other Monday match, Apollon Patras defeated Aris 64-53 to move clear of the relegation zone.

Η Αθήνα τον Μαραθώνιο, το Ρέθυμνο τον Αρκάδιο δρόμο λοιπόν. Είναι συγκρίσιμα τα δύο αυτά αθλητικά γεγονότα;

Το ερώτημα που τίθεται είναι με ποιο τρόπο τιμούμε καλύτερα, την εθελοθυσία εκατοντάδων ηρώων του τόπου μας, για την ελευθερία και την ανεξαρτησία;

Με τα βαρετά λογίδια που επαναλαμβάνουμε κάθε χρόνο, ακολουθούμενα από το απαραίτητο τραπέζωμα η με την ευγενή συμμετοχή αθλητών που χύνουν τον ιδρώτα τους και προσφέρουν τις τελευταίες τους δυνάμεις, για να τιμήσουν τους ηρωικούς τους προγόνους;

5th Nemean Games to Commence

The Nemean Games 2012 are about to commence in Nemea, some 23km from Corinth, north-eastern Peloponnese, and participants aged between 8 and 82 years old are ready to take part in an event reliving the Games of antiquity.
The celebration will begin with the opening ceremonies at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 22. These will be highlighted by the lighting of the flame at the Altar of Nemean Zeus and the crowning of Nemea by Ekecheiria (Sacred Truce). As in Ancient Greece, the Sacred Truce both protected and symbolized the spirit of peaceful competitions.

Saturday, June 23 will be a full day of footraces for all who have registered to run no later than May 15. There will be “stadion” races of 100m on the ancient track, and a 7.5km “Footsteps of Herakles” race from the ancient temple of Herakles at Kleonai back to the Nemea stadium. At the end of the day all the winners will be crowned with the traditional wild celery, followed by a buffet at the local school hosted by the Cultural Society of Ancient Nemea.

On the final day, Sunday, June 24 at 7:30 p.m. there will be presented in the ancient stadium the “Nemeada,” a poetically framed story of the ancient mythology and history of Nemea and the Nemean Games written by George Kostouros, the vice-president of the Society. This piece was first presented at the Fourth Nemead in 2008 and proved to be very popular with the local people.

The festival will take place in the ancient stadium (constructed about 330 B.C.) at the eastern edge of the modern village of Ancient Nemea. Participants will run barefoot, and wear white tunics (the ancient chiton - in place of ancient nudity) in the first locker-room known in the history of mankind.
They will proceed through the ancient tunnel, being careful not to damage the graffiti scratched on its walls by athletes 2,300 years ago – and not to add their own graffiti to the ancient monument. At the far end of the tunnel, each participant will wait for her or his name to be announced by the herald, and then will run out onto the track.

The Nemean Games are organized by the Society for the Revival of the Nemean Games, a movement born from nearly 40 years of excavation by the University of California at Berkeley in the panhellenic Sanctuary of Zeus at Nemea, Greece, and from the enthusiasm and dedication of local residents of Nemea who feel that they could make an important contribution to today’s world because of their personal ties to Nemea.

The event is also organized under the aegis of the Greek Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Prefecture of Peloponnese and the Hellenic National Committee for UNESCO.
